Gum Augmentation

Gum graft or gum augmentation is a type of dental surgery that corrects the effects of gum recession. Gum recession occurs due to wear and tear of the gum tissue exposing more of the tooth and its roots.

At SmileMint Studio, our board-certified periodontists perform this procedure where they remove the healthy gum tissue from the roof of the mouth and use it to build the gum where it has receded.

The Gum Augmentation Procedure

We offer a variety of gum grafts, and the type of surgery we undertake depends on the severity of the damage and your requirements. We will discuss all options with you, and you can select an option that you find most suitable.

Before starting the gum augmentation surgery, our periodontists will numb the area using a local anesthetic and ensure that the procedure doesn’t hurt you. They may also lift the existing gum away to expose the tooth roots and clean them.

Types of Gum Augmentation

There are three types of gum graft surgery:

Connective Tissue graft

Here, our periodontists remove the tissue from the roof of your mouth by flapping and taking the tissue from underneath the top layer. Then they stitch the tissue onto the existing gum tissue to cover the exposed dental root. After which, they stitch the flap on the roof of the mouth from where they extracted the tissue.

Free Gingival grafts

Our dentists recommend this procedure for people who have thin gums and require extra tissue to enlarge the gums. Here, they remove the tissue directly from the top layer of tissue on the roof of the mouth. Then they stitch this tissue to the existing gum area.

Pedicle (lateral) grafts

We recommend this treatment to people with lots of gum tissue growing near the exposed tooth. Here, our periodontists graft the tissue from the gums near the tooth, requiring treatment. They will stretch the tissue over or down, covering the exposed dental root and holding it in place with stitches.
